Response to Burglary Calls

1.               PURPOSE

 

The intent of this directive is to ensure an efficient response to burglary calls in an effort to provide as much data collection and evidence in solving these crimes as possible.

 

2.               POLICY

 

It shall be the policy of the Atlanta Police Department’s Field Operations Division to make every effort possible to exhaust all solvability factors when responding to incidents of burglary.

 

3.               RESPONSIBILITIES

 

3.1              Zone/section commanders will ensure that personnel under their respective commands adhere to this policy.

 

3.2              Watch commanders shall include as part of monthly inspections the inclusion of burglary identification kits for selected officers.

 

3.3              Watch commanders shall identify an officer whose secondary function is to conduct preliminary investigations on incidents of burglary.

 

4.                               ACTION

 

4.1                           Supervisors shall acknowledge and respond to all incidents of burglary calls.

 

4.2                           Supervisors will ensure that officers make attempts to process latent fingerprints on all burglary incidents.

 

4.3                           Supervisors will ensure that officers canvass surrounding areas in an attempt to locate witnesses or physical evidence possibly related to the incident.

 

4.4                           Field Investigations Team supervisor shall maintain a database of all known burglary suspects within each zone, to include photographs if possible.
