Transportation of Arrestees

1.               PURPOSE

 

The intent of this directive is to establish a sound procedure by which to transport arrestees to the appropriate detention facility.

 

2.               POLICY

 

It shall be the policy of the Atlanta Police Department’s Field Operations Division to ensure that arrestees are transported to jail in an expeditious and safe manner.

 

3.               RESPONSIBILITIES

 

3.1                             Zone/section commanders will ensure that officers under their respective entities adhere to this directive.

 

4.                               ACTION

 

4.1                           Supervisors will monitor the duration between the time that an officer requests a wagon to transport a prisoner, and the time that the arrestee arrives at the appropriate detention facility.

 

4.2                           When the identity of an arrestee cannot be confirmed at the site of the arrest, the arresting officer will transport the arrestee to the Identification Unit to make the determination.

 

4.3                           Officers will take the shortest and most direct route to the appropriate detention facility, and refrain from stopping at any other point except in an extreme emergency situation.

 

4.4                           Officers will ensure that all arrestees are searched, handcuffed, and under their observation until arrival at the detention center.
