M&P40 .40 Caliber Pistols

1.               PURPOSE

 

To establish policy for the Department’s transition to the Smith and Wesson Model M&P40 .40 caliber pistol.

 

2.               POLICY

 

The Atlanta Police Department will allow sworn employees to carry the Smith and Wesson Model M&P40 .40 caliber pistol.

 

3.               RESPONSIBILITIES

 

3.1             The Chief of Police is responsible for determining the lethal and less lethal weapons that will be issued to sworn employees of the Department.

 

4.               ACTION

 

4.1              All sworn employees are authorized to carry the Department issued .40 caliber Smith and Wesson Model M&P40 pistol both on duty and off duty after they have been trained by a certified Department instructor and demonstrated proficiency to the Training Section.

 

4.2             Only Department issued or approved ammunition will be carried and/or used in Department issued firearms.  Department approved ammunition for the .40 caliber firearm is the Winchester Ranger 180 grain SXT.

 

4.3              All sworn employees are authorized to carry the Smith and Wesson Model M&P40 Compact .40 caliber pistol or the Smith and Wesson Model M&P9 Compact 9mm pistol as a second weapon both on and off duty provided that the pistol is equipped with a magazine disconnect and they have been trained by a certified Department firearms instructor and demonstrate proficiency to the Training Unit.

 

4.4             Only Department issued or approved ammunition will be carried and/or used in the second weapons.  Department approved ammunition for the .40 caliber is the Winchester Ranger 180 grain SXT.  Department approved ammunition for the 9mm is the Winchester Ranger 124 grain SXT +P.
