This order authorizes the Airport Section to carry and deploy the Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun and to use 12 gauge 2 ¾ inch rifled slug ammunition in City issued shotguns at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The Atlanta Police Department will authorize properly trained, sworn employees assigned to the Airport Section to carry and deploy the Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun and to use 12 gauge 2 ¾ inch rifled slug ammunition in City issued shotguns at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport during high-risk incidents in a potentially highly-congested environment.
3.1 FOD and Airport Section commanders will monitor implementation of this directive.
3.2 The Training Section commander is responsible for ensuring that all training meets Department and Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council requirements and for recommending the specific equipment to be issued and used. The Training Section will also be responsible for the storage and maintenance of all training records.
3.3 Supervisors will conduct inspections of the Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun in accordance with APD.SOP.3040 “Weapons”.
3.4 Employees will be responsible for adhering to the guidelines set forth in this directive.
4.1 Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun
4.1.1 Sworn employees assigned to the Airport Section are authorized to carry and use the Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun once the employee has been trained by a certified Department firearms instructor and has demonstrated proficiency to the Training Section. Refresher or update training will occur at least annually.
4.1.2 Only Department issued or approved, .40 caliber ammunition will be carried and/or used in the Heckler & Koch UMP40 Submachine Gun.
4.2 12 gauge 2 ¾ inch Rifled Slug Ammunition
4.2.1 Sworn employees assigned to the Airport Section are authorized to carry and use 12 gauge 2 ¾ inch rifled slug ammunition in City issued shotguns.
4.2.2 Sworn employees will be trained by a certified Department firearms instructor and will demonstrate proficiency in the use of Department issued shotguns to the Training Section. Refresher or update training will occur at least annually.
4.2.3 Sworn employees authorized to carry rifled slug ammunition will shoot a quarterly proficiency that is established by the Firearms Training Unit.
4.2.4 Any officer that fails to qualify annually or misses more than one quarterly training session will not be authorized to carry the rifled slug ammunition in their assigned city shotgun.
