Airport Section - Employee of the Month Awards

1.               PURPOSE

 

The purpose of this Command Memorandum is to establish policy and procedure for Atlanta Police Department - Airport Section (APD-AS) employees to be nominated for “Employee of the Month” for outstanding services, achievements or actions.

 

2.               POLICY

 

                  The APD-AS Supervisors will identify and recognize APD-AS sworn and civilian employees for outstanding public services achievements or actions by nominating employees for “Employee of the Month.”  The APD-AS Awards Committee will choose the award recipient on a monthly basis.

 

                  The APD-AS “Employee of the Month” award is not to be used in lieu of any other Atlanta Police Department or Department of Aviation Award. 

 

                  Unless unusual circumstances dictate, only one employee will receive the award per month.

 

3.               RESPONSIBILITIES

 

3.1              The Section Commander will implement this policy and procedure in their commands. 

 

3.2              The Section Commander will ensure that all employees are following this policy and procedure.

 

3.3              The Section Commander will ensure an Awards Committee is formed; and the Awards Committee follows the policy and procedures in this command memorandum.

 

3.4              Watch Commanders will ensure that their Supervisors implement the policies and procedure.

 

3.5              Supervisors are responsible to seek out and recognize excellence in their employees, as they contribute to reaching the mission of the Atlanta Police Department; "A professional crime fighting team, dedicated to providing a safe environment for all of Atlanta."

 

3.6              Supervisors will recognize excellence when employees demonstrate the following behaviors:

 

·         Outstanding Customer Service

·         Outstanding investigations of incidents

·         Outstanding apprehension of suspect(s)

·         Outstanding administrative accomplishments

·         Outstanding Performance (totality of employees work ethics)

·         Outstanding Performance with co-workers

·         Providing Emergency Medical Care

 

3.7              The APD-AS Award Committee will be responsible for meeting monthly to review nominations and choosing an “Employee of the Month.”         

 

3.8              The AS Administrative Sergeant will oversee the Awards Committee nominations, meetings; and ensure the funding is adequate to support this policy. 

 

3.9              The Supply/Budget Officer will be responsible for funding the “Employee of the Month” wall plaques, certificates, and photographs.

 

3.10            The Section Commander’s Administrative Assistant will accept, catalog and maintain all nomination records on award recipients.

 

4.               ACTION

 

4.1              Watch Supervisors will choose one (1) sworn employee from their watch to serve as peers on the Awards Committee.  The Awards Committee will be comprised of eight employees (non-supervisor), and the Administrative Sergeant.  The eight (8) peer employees will vote for the award winner for the "Employee of the Month". 

 

                  For example:  Day Watch sworn employee; Evening Watch sworn employee; Morning Watch sworn employee; K-9/EOD sworn employee; Traffic Control Inspector employee; Investigator; Communications civilian employee; Administrative civilian employee.

 

4.2              The Administrative Sergeant will serve as the Award Committee Chairperson and monitor the activities of the Award Committee.  The Administrative Sergeant will vote "only" as a tie breaker and not in situations when the chairperson is the nominator.

 

4.3              Award Committee employees will serve on the committee from January 01 to December 31 each calendar year. 

 

4.4              At no time will the awards committee meet with less than five employees and the chairperson.  In cases where less than five employees are available, the monthly meeting will be rescheduled.

 

4.6              Nominations for awards may be made by any Supervisor with knowledge of an act by an  employee that meets the criteria of this command memorandum.

 

4.6              The nomination should be made on APD Form 208 APD-AS.  (See attached)

 

4.7              Nominations should include a Memorandum highlighting the reasons for nomination; and incident reports, arrest reports, data base spreadsheets, administrative documents, specialized reports from K-9/EOD,  letters of Commendation, or other related documentation.  (Attach to APD Form 208 APD-AS).   

  

4.8              Nominating Supervisors will keep a copy of the nomination form, and all supporting documents.   Nominating Supervisors will submit nominations to the Administrative Sergeant by the fifth (5) of each month. 

 

4.9           The Awards Committee will meet the second week of the month and choose an

                “Employee of the Month.”  The committee will review nominations and submit votes to  determine the award recipient.  

 

4.10            The Administrative Sergeant will inform the Section Commander of the award recipient.

 

4.11            The Administrative Sergeant will ensure that an employee certificate and photo will be  completed. 

 

4.12            The Supply/Budget Office will post the new “Employee of the Month” on the Answer the Call wall by the 1st of the following month.

 

4.13            Section Commander will present the employee with the “Employee of the Month” certificate.

 

4.14            The Administrative Sergeant will ensure a copy of the "Employee of the Month" certificate will be placed in the employees personnel file.

 

5.               DEFINITIONS  

 

5.1              Awards

 

5.1.1           The "Employee of the Month" award consists of:

 

1.    An award certificate signed by the Section Commander

 

2.    A copy of the award certificate placed in the employees personnel file

 

3.    The name and photograph of the employee placed on the APD-AS “Answer the Call” wall.
