Notification of Significant OPS Matters to the Chief of Police

1.               PURPOSE

 

To establish a procedure to ensure the Chief of Police is notified of significant OPS matters, in a timely manner.

 

2.               POLICY

 

The OPS commander will ensure that the Chief of Police is notified of OPS significant matters in a timely manner.

 

3.               RESPONSIBILITIES

 

3.1              All OPS personnel will immediately report all significant matters to their immediate supervisor, verbally and by means of written documentation.

 

3.2              During normal business hours, the unit commander will ensure the OPS commander is immediately notified of all significant matters, verbally and by means of written documentation.

 

3.3              After hours, the on-call sergeant will immediately notify the on-call lieutenant of all significant matters, verbally.  The on-call lieutenant will immediately notify the OPS commander.

 

3.4              The OPS commander is responsible for reporting all significant OPS matters to the Chief of Police in a timely manner.

 

4.               ACTION

 

4.1              The on-call sergeant will ensure all written documentation pertaining to significant OPS matters that occur after hours is forwarded to the on-call lieutenant on or by the next business day, for his/her review.

 

4.2              The on-call lieutenant will ensure all written documentation pertaining to significant OPS matters that occur after hours is forwarded to the OPS commander the next business day, for his/her review.

 

4.3              The Response Team sergeant will ensure that all written documentation pertaining to significant OPS matters that occur during normal business hours is forwarded to their unit commander, as soon as practical, for his/her review.

 

4.4              The unit commander will ensure all written documentation pertaining to significant OPS matters that occur during normal business hours is immediately forwarded to the OPS commander, for review.

 

4.5              The OPS commander will ensure all written documentation pertaining to matters that occur during normal and after business hours is forwarded to the Chief’s office during normal business hours by 10 am, 2 pm or as he deems appropriate.

 

5.               DEFINITIONS

 

5.1              Significant Matters: All incidents or information pertaining to employee: corruption, use of force, police involved shootings, arrests, deaths, misconduct, involvement in illegal activity, conduct which poses a threat or danger to him- or herself or others, and other matters deemed appropriate by the OPS Commander.
