INTRODUCTORY.
The second issue of the Wkst Virginia State Gazetteer and Business Directory is now presented to the public. In addition to giving the names of all persons doing business in the State, a brief sketch of every city, town and village is contained herein; also a most complete classified directory of all businesses and professions, as well as other useful information and statistics, pertaining to the commercial and manufactur- ing interests of the State at large. A work of this kind necessarily in- volves a great amount of labor, and the expenditure of large sums of money, neither of which have been withheld, the aim of the publishers being to make it in every respect, creditable to themselves and worthy the confidence and support of the public.
The publishers desire to express their thanks to the business men of the State for the patronage and support accorded them. This book is larger, by more than a hundred pages, and is far more compactly printed than the previous Gazetteer, the conclusion being that the State has, within the last few years, made very rapid advancement. On this fact we congratulate the citizens. The outlook for the future is bright, and every thing indicates that the State has before it a career of success never before equalled.

LEWISBURGH. An incorporated town, with a j^op- ulation of 1000, the county seat of Greenbrier county, is located near the Greenbrier river, in the southwestern part of the county, 3 miles north of Ronceverte station, on the C. & O. Ry., its shipping point, 3 miles west of Caldwell station, and 9 miles west of White Sulphur Springs. It is also known as Saucerville, was settled in 1769 and incorporated in 1872, and is surrounded by a good farming and stock raising country, some of the finest " Blue Grass "" land in the state being in the vicinity. There is also an abundant supply of good white oak, cherrj^ black walnut and pine timber, which is now proving a source of great wealth to the place, and within a radius of 20 miles 15 steam saw mills are in operation. It contains a bank, 5 churches — Baptist, C-atholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, North and South — 2 public schools, and the Lewisbiirgh Female Institute, an excellent educational establishment, a newspaper, the Greetibrier Independent, is published weekly. The town is free from debt, and has an assessed valuation of 183,027.50. Good land may be had in the neighborhood from $10 to |40 per acre. Lumber, wool, live stock, grain and produce are shipped. The town has a telephone exchange. Stages to Ronceverte, twice daily ; fare, 50 cents. Mail, daily. J. M. McWhorter, postmaster.

RONCEVERTE. An incorporated town with a popula- tion of 500, and a station on the C. & O. Ry., in the south of Greenbrier county, 3 miles south of Lewisburgh (c h). It is located on ,the Greenbrier river, which furnishes power to run flour mills, etc. The St. Lawa-ence Boom & Manufacturing Co., the Greenbrier Lumber Co., and the New York Hoop Co. hav^ extensive steam saw and planing mills.
